Absolutely not. Every body is different, and we have a variety of props - including chairs - to help adapt poses to work for you. For all classes, you need to be able to get up and down from the floor. Consider starting with a Gentle class if you are on the stiffer side or have never done yoga before. If you have an acute injury, please talk to your doctor or physical therapist before starting or returning to yoga.
Iyengar Yoga is a method of practice and teaching developed by Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar over 75 years ago. Mr. Iyengar was dedicated to understanding the connections between the classical study of yoga through Patajali’s Yoga Sutras, practice of physical postures (asana) and breath work (pranayama) for dynamic physical and spiritual health. He considered the practice of yoga to be an art and a science
When you practice Iyengar Yoga your teacher will guide you through each pose, moving from simple to complex instructions that hone your mental and physical awareness. Props are often used to improve the understanding of a pose, and to help less flexible students access the benefits of the pose. Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers (CIYTs) undergo a rigorous training program that includes direct mentorship and years of study and practice before they can be assessed for a teaching certification.
